You get credited for every kWh you export.

Under Alberta's Micro-Generation Regulation, when your solar system produces more than your home consumes, the surplus is exported to the grid and your retailer credits your account at your full retail energy rate.

  • Credits applied at your full retail rate — not a lower wholesale rate
  • No interconnection fees — prohibited by provincial regulation
  • Bidirectional meter provided free of charge by your utility
  • Credits roll forward month-to-month on your account
  • Retailers must pay out any remaining credit balance annually
  • Works with all major Alberta retailers: ENMAX, ATCO, Direct Energy, and others

Net Billing vs. Net Metering — what's the difference?

Alberta does not use traditional net metering. The province uses net billing where export credits are calculated at the retail commodity rate, not a fixed grid rate. This means your exports are worth more in Alberta than in provinces using wholesale-rate net metering.

Net Billing

Retail-Rate Net Billing Credits

Bill → $0

Under Alberta's Micro-Generation Regulation, surplus power you export earns credits at your full retail energy rate — not a lower wholesale rate. No interconnection fees. Bidirectional meter provided free. Credits roll forward monthly; retailers pay out any remaining balance annually.

Rate Protection

Lock In Against Rising Rates

3–5% / year

Alberta electricity rates rise 3–5% annually. Your solar system's output cost stays fixed at zero. Every year you wait, you pay more in grid energy costs — and your solar payback period gets shorter as rates climb.

Why solar works exceptionally well in Alberta.

Alberta's unique combination of sunshine, electricity rates, and CEIP financing makes it one of Canada's top provinces for solar ROI.

☀️
Sunshine

2,300+ sunshine hours per year

Calgary gets more sun than Miami, Florida. Alberta ranks among Canada's sunniest provinces — your panels generate strong output year-round, not just in summer.

❄️
Cold Climate

Cold weather improves efficiency

Solar panels are more efficient in cold temperatures. Alberta winters are not a barrier — they're an advantage. Panels peak on crisp, clear winter days.

💰
Electricity Rates

~25¢/kWh all-in electricity cost

Alberta's retail electricity averages ~25¢/kWh all-in. Higher retail rates mean every kWh your panels produce — and every net billing credit — is worth more.

📈
Rising Rates

Rates rise 3–5% every year

Alberta electricity costs increase 3–5% annually. Your solar output costs $0. Every year you delay, the grid costs you more — and your payback period shortens.
