Going Solar in Quebec
Quebec has some of Canada's lowest electricity rates thanks to abundant hydroelectric power, which historically made solar payback periods longer. However, rising rates and Hydro-Québec's net metering program have made solar a worthwhile investment for Quebec homeowners.
Note: The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant (closed February 2024) and Canada Greener Homes Loan (closed October 2025) are no longer accepting new applications. Quebec homeowners can still benefit from Hydro-Québec's net metering program and provincial renovation tax credit programs.
Below are the Quebec solar incentives and rebates that may benefit you.
Quebec Solar Incentives, Rebates, And Benefits
Canada Greener Homes Grant (Closed Feb 2024)
The Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applications in February 2024 (program ran May 2021–February 2024). No new applications are being accepted. Existing approved applicants may still complete their claims. Visit NRCan.gc.ca for information on any successor federal programs.
Canada Greener Homes Loan (Closed Oct 2025)
The Canada Greener Homes Loan closed in October 2025 (final application deadline was January 20, 2026). No new applications are being accepted. Visit NRCan.gc.ca for information on any successor federal financing programs.
Hydro-Québec Net Metering
Hydro-Québec's net metering program allows residential solar owners to receive credits for excess generation. While credits are valued at Hydro-Québec's wholesale rate rather than the full retail rate, the program still provides meaningful savings, especially during peak summer production months.
Quebec Tax Credit for Home Renovation
Quebec's RénoVert and related renovation tax credit programs may apply to certain solar installation expenses. Consult a Quebec tax advisor to determine eligibility and maximize your provincial incentive package.
Quebec Net Metering
Hydro-Québec offers net metering under its Self-Supply with Net Metering program for residential systems up to 50 kW. Excess electricity is credited at the rate applicable to the billing period in which it was generated. Credits roll over and are applied against future consumption.
Additional Quebec Solar Programs
Rénoclimat Program
Quebec's Rénoclimat program offers grants for home energy efficiency upgrades including insulation, windows, and heat pumps. While not directly focused on solar, the program's energy audit can be paired with solar installation to create a comprehensive home energy improvement strategy.
Energir Renewable Gas Programs
For Quebec homeowners with natural gas service, Energir offers programs supporting energy transition. Combined with solar electricity, these programs can help Quebec homeowners significantly reduce their total energy costs and carbon footprint.
Quebec Solar Incentives — At A Glance
Quebec's low base electricity rates mean solar payback periods are longer than other provinces, typically 13–18 years. However, net metering and a 25+ year system lifespan still make solar a worthwhile long-term investment for Quebec homeowners.
